Peroneal tendon subluxation
There are two peroneal tendons on the outside of the ankles. They connect the ankle and foot to the muscles in your lower leg and aid in stability when changing direction. Subluxation is when one or both tendons have slipped out of their normal position.

Causes
Subluxation can occur following trauma e.g. an ankle sprain. Some people may also be born with a variation in the shape of the bone or muscle that predisposes them to this condition.
Symptoms
Symptoms of subluxation may include a snapping feeling of the tendon, sporadic pain behind the outside of the ankle and weakness or instability of the ankle.
Treatment
Treatment can include immobilisation, pain medication, bracing and Physiotehrapy. Early treatment of a subluxation is critical, since a tendon that continues to move out of position is more likely to tear or rupture.
Ankle pain can be distressing, especially if you're not sure what options are open to you. If you're wondering if surgery could help you, book an appointment.
